LED Strip Light vs Rope Light: Which One Should You Choose?

The two formats serve similar decorative purposes but are not identical.

• A LED strip light is a flexible strip with LEDs arranged along its length. It can be useful for accent lighting and installations where the strip needs to follow a surface closely.

• A rope light has the LEDs enclosed in a flexible rope-style body and can be more suitable for longer decorative runs and applications where additional protection is required.

What Does 60 LEDs per Metre or 120 LEDs per Metre Mean?

LED density refers to the number of LEDs placed along one metre of the strip.

How to Choose the Right LED Strip Light

1. Measure the length first

Measure the complete run before choosing the product. For shorter applications, a smaller length can be more practical. For longer ceiling borders, staircases or decorative runs, a 10-metre format may reduce the need for multiple sections. Our range includes 5-metre and 10-metre JoyLite formats. 

2. Consider LED density

Compare the number of LEDs per metre along with the wattage and light output. The Eternal Shine uses 60 LEDs per metre and provides a listed 2200-lumen output at 24W. The JoyLite models use 120 LEDs per metre with a listed 3000-lumen output at 30W.

3. Choose the colour for the space

For a warm, relaxed atmosphere, Warm White is a natural choice. For decorative setups, coloured variants can create a different visual effect. The Eternal Shine range includes multiple colour choices, including RGB, while JoyLite is available in colours such as Warm White, Blue, Green, Pink and White.

4. Check the power requirement

Do not assume that every LED strip uses the same power arrangement. The Eternal Shine is specified at 12V DC, 2A and 24W. JoyLite is specified at 220–240VAC and 30W, with an AC adaptor-based setup.  Always check the product specifications and use the appropriate power arrangement for the selected model.

5. Check the installation method

Eternal Shine has adhesive backing, while JoyLite includes clamps and uses a plug-and-play style setup. The installation method therefore depends on the product you choose.

6. Check whether the product suits indoor or outdoor use

Do not assume that every strip light is suitable for outdoor installation. The JoyLite 5-metre and 10-metre rope-strip products are specified with IP65 protection and are marketed for indoor and outdoor applications. 

For any installation exposed to moisture, always check the exact product specifications before use.

A longer roll may offer a lower cost per metre, but the better choice depends on what the installation actually requires.

Yes, but the strip and the profile are not the same thing.

• A profile is a housing that can hold an LED strip and, where applicable, use a diffuser to create a cleaner linear appearance. The strip should be compatible with the selected profile in terms of size, installation and power requirements.
