LED Torch

A LED torch is a small handheld light you keep ready for power cuts, late-night errands, camping or a quick look under the bed or behind a cupboard. Orient Electric LED torches are priced from ₹74 and come in two types: compact 1W torches for everyday use and a 9W rechargeable torch for longer backup light.

How to choose a LED torch

Four things decide most of the choice:

• Wattage. The 1W torches give a focused beam in a very small body. The 9W model gives a much brighter, wider light.
• Weight and size. A torch of 40 to 62 g slips into a pocket or a bag. The 9W torch weighs about 170 g.
• Recharging. The BeamX LED Torch is rechargeable with common chargers, so you do not need to keep buying cells for it.
• Price. Compare the price with how often you will use it. A low-cost torch is enough for the drawer, a rechargeable one suits regular use.

Which torch is right for you?

The Bolt and Ranger Dual are light, compact 1W torches with a polycarbonate body. They suit a bedside table, a bag or a car glove box, and they are easy to carry when you walk out at night.

The BeamX is for longer, wider light. It is a portable rechargeable LED light that can be hung or placed on a surface, which makes it useful as a backup light during a power outage, while travelling or camping.

Why a LED torch

LED lights turn most of the power they use into light and little into heat, so a small cell or battery goes a long way. A LED torch also has no filament to break, which suits a light that gets dropped or knocked about.

Tips to look after your torch

• Switch it off after use and keep it in a dry place.
• Charge a rechargeable torch with a suitable charger and do not leave it charging for days.
• Do not shine a torch into anyone's eyes, and keep it away from small children.
• Try the torch once a month so it works when you need it in a power cut.
