An extension board is useful when the nearest wall socket is not where you need it or when you need additional outlets for compatible devices.

The right model depends on how many devices you need to connect, how far the board needs to reach, the type of plugs you use and the electrical load involved.

For a desk, a compact multi-socket board may be enough. A longer cable can be more useful when the wall outlet is several metres away. For higher-current applications, the board's rated current and protection features become particularly important.

Do not choose an extension board simply by the number of sockets. Cable length, current rating, socket design and protection can matter just as much.

What Is an Extension Board?

An extension board, also called a power extension board, socket extension board or power strip in everyday usage, allows compatible electrical devices to be connected through a cable that extends from a wall outlet.

It does not increase the electrical capacity of the wall circuit. The connected devices still draw power from the same supply, so the board should always be used within its rated electrical limits.

4-Socket Extension Boards for Everyday Use

A 4-socket extension board can be convenient when you need several outlets in one location. Orient Electric currently offers 4-socket models with 2-metre and 5-metre wires, along with a 4x4 socket version. The 2-metre white model and 2-metre black model use universal sockets, while the 5-metre model provides extra reach where the wall outlet is farther away.

These can be useful for compatible lower-power devices around a study table, workstation, entertainment setup or home office. The number of sockets should still be considered together with the board's electrical rating.

Long-Wire Extension Boards: 2m, 4m or 5m?

Cable length becomes important when your wall outlet is not close to the place where you need power. We have standard extension boards with 2-metre and 5-metre cables, while its reel designs provide 4 metres of cable. The 16A Power Extension Board is available in 2m and 4m variants, giving more flexibility for different placement requirements.

Choose the shortest cable that comfortably reaches your intended position. An unnecessarily long cable can create more wire to manage around the room.

Reel Extension Boards for Flexible Cable Management

A reel extension board stores its cable around a rotating body, making it easier to extend the wire when needed and keep excess cable more organised when it is not.

We offers 2-pin and 3-pin reel power cord extension boards, along with a rectangular 4-metre reel model. The current 3-pin reel model has three universal sockets and a 4-metre cable, while the rectangular reel also provides three universal sockets and 4-metre reach.

Reel designs can be particularly practical when cable reach changes depending on where you are working.

16A Power Extension Board: When Should You Consider One?

A 16A extension board is designed for a higher current rating than the standard boards in the collection, making the rating an important part of its intended use.

Orient Electric's 16A Power Extension Board provides a 16A current capacity, universal sockets, brass contacts, MCB protection and 2m/4m cable options. Product specification is 2500W rating at 240V.

The important point is that 16A does not mean every appliance can safely be connected simply because the plug fits. Check the appliance's power requirement, the extension board's rating and the manufacturer's instructions before use.

Standard Extension Board vs 16A Power Board

These products should not be treated as interchangeable. The current standard OEL boards include models specified at 500W, while the 16A Power Extension Board is specified at 2500W and includes MCB protection. That makes the electrical rating a more useful comparison point than simply looking at socket count.

For higher-power appliances, use only a board that is specifically rated and intended for that load, and follow the appliance and extension-board safety instructions.

Universal Socket Extension Boards

A universal socket extension board can accommodate different plug designs, which can be useful in homes and offices where devices do not all use the same plug format.

Several Orient Electric models specify universal sockets, including the 4-socket boards, reel models and 16A Power Extension Board. Universal compatibility does not mean every connected appliance is automatically safe to use. The electrical load and board rating still need to match.

Brass Contacts and Secure Plug Connection

The quality of the internal electrical contacts matters because the board repeatedly connects and disconnects appliances. Orient Electric's current extension boards use brass contacts with spring action on applicable models, designed to provide a secure connection and support durability.

Safety Features to Check in an Extension Board

An extension board handles electricity for multiple devices, so protection features should be considered before price or appearance.

Depending on the model, useful features can include:

• MCB protection: The 16A Power Extension Board includes an MCB designed to provide ON/OFF control and overload-short-circuit protection.
• Overload and short-circuit protection: Selected standard OEL models specify protection against overloads and short circuits.
• LED power indication: Selected boards use an LED indicator to show the power status.
• Secure contacts: Brass contacts and spring mechanisms are used on applicable models.

Protection features are model-specific, so check the selected product rather than assuming the whole collection has identical safety functions.

Extension Board for Laptop and Computer Setups

A computer extension board can be useful when a workstation has several compatible devices close together, such as a monitor, desktop computer, speakers, router or other peripherals. Here, socket arrangement, cable length and convenient placement are usually more important than choosing the highest-current model.

For a desk setup, a 2-metre extension board may be sufficient when the wall outlet is nearby. A longer 4m or 5m option can provide more flexibility when the desk is farther away.

Extension Board for TV and Entertainment Units

A multi-socket extension board can help organise compatible low-to-moderate-power devices around a TV unit or entertainment setup. The useful features are usually multiple sockets, adequate cable reach and easy power control where available.

Avoid connecting appliances that exceed the board's rating merely because an unused socket is available. Multiple devices share the same extension-board supply.

Can You Use an Extension Board for an Iron?

An iron is a relatively high-power appliance, so plug compatibility is not enough to determine whether an extension board is suitable. Check the iron's rated power and the extension board's current/power rating. If the board is not specifically rated for the appliance load, use a suitable wall outlet instead.

Orient Electric's 16A Power Extension Board with MCB protection, but its higher rating still does not remove the need to check the iron manufacturer's instructions and the total electrical load.

Can You Use an Extension Board for an Induction Cooktop?

An induction cooktop can draw substantial power, so a standard extension board should not be used simply because its plug fits. Check the cooktop's electrical requirements and the extension board's rated capacity. Where the appliance manufacturer recommends direct connection to a wall outlet, follow that instruction rather than using an extension board.

This is particularly important because several standard extension boards in the current Orient Electric range are specified at 500W, while the 16A Power Extension Board is a higher-rated product.

Why Cable Length Should Not Be Your Only Criterion

A longer wire gives you more reach, but it does not automatically make an extension board more useful. For example, a 5-metre board may be convenient when the wall socket is far from the workstation. For a desk that sits next to the outlet, 2 metres may be easier to manage.

How to Choose the Right Extension Board Online

Before you buy an extension board online, check:

• Number of sockets: How many compatible devices actually need to be connected?
• Current/power rating: Does the board support the electrical load of the intended devices?
• Cable length: Would 2m, 4m or 5m give you enough reach without unnecessary excess cable?
• Socket type: Do the plugs you use fit the board?
• Protection: Does the selected model provide MCB, overload, short-circuit or other specified protection?
• Form factor: Would a conventional board or reel design be easier to manage?
• Intended use: Is it for a desk, TV unit, computer setup or another location?
• Product instructions: Always follow the extension board and appliance manufacturer's electrical-use guidance.
