A typical 2BHK needs about 27 light fittings, and a 3BHK about 43. With the Orient Electric picks below, that works out to roughly Rs. 7,188 for a 2BHK and Rs. 11,787 for a 3BHK, at current prices. These counts are a starting plan, not a rule. Room size, ceiling height and how you use each room will move them up or down.

The plan splits every room into two jobs. Ambient lights fill the room with general brightness. Accent and task lights are small fittings that add depth, light a corner or help with a specific job such as reading or cooking. Get both right and a flat looks finished, even before the furniture arrives.

How should you divide ambient and accent lighting?

In both plans the count comes out close to half and half, but the work is not shared equally. The ambient fittings are the larger, brighter ones and they carry most of the light in the room. The accent fittings are small, low-wattage lights, so they add little to the bill but a lot to how the room feels.

A simple way to use this: put ambient lights on one switch and accent lights on another. In the evening you can switch off the main panels and leave only the wall lights and spots on. Ask your electrician to plan the switch layout while the wiring is still open.

Colour matters as much as count. Warm white suits bedrooms, the living room and the pooja room. Kitchens and work areas feel better with brighter, cooler light, and our warm white vs cool white guide shows how the two compare. The 3CCT bathroom light lets you switch between the two without buying a second fitting.

The under-cabinet spot lights are worth a look on the cabinet lights, and the COB range is on the COB lights. If you want a statement piece in the living room, a wall light such as the Raya Curve (priced at Rs. 1,304) can be added on top of either plan.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How many lights are needed for a 2BHK?

A: About 27 fittings in the plan above: 14 ambient and 13 accent or task lights. Treat it as a starting point and adjust for the size of each room.

Q: How many lights are needed for a 3BHK?

A: About 43 fittings: 22 ambient and 21 accent or task lights. The extra count comes from the dining area, third bedroom, third bathroom, pooja room and second balcony.

Q: What should I change if my rooms are bigger or smaller than usual?

A: Add or remove one ambient panel per room before touching the accent lights. A large living room may take an extra panel, and a small bedroom may do well with one panel and two wall lights.

Q: Do accent lights need a separate switch?

A: It helps a lot. With a separate switch you can keep only the soft lights on in the evening. Decide this with your electrician before the wiring is closed.

Q: Can I follow this plan in a rented flat?

A: Yes. The surface panel, wall lights and spot lights suit places where you cannot cut into the ceiling. Check what your landlord allows before you drill or change fittings.
