Diwali Lights for Balcony: 7 Setups for Small and Large Balconies
Light the railing first, then the back wall, and only then the ceiling edge. Most balconies look best with one or two of those three, in one colour. Below are seven setups, from a small balcony with room for two chairs to a wrap-around one, priced from Rs. 511 to Rs. 1,849. Each one uses Orient Electric Joylite lights, and each says where the lights go and what the balcony looks like from the street and from your seat. Pick the one closest to your balcony, then swap a light or two to suit it.
How should you plan a balcony before choosing lights?
Think of the balcony as three surfaces: the railing in front of you, the wall behind you and the ceiling edge above. A balcony rarely needs all three, and trying to light everything is how it ends up looking busy. Pick one or two, and keep to one main colour.
Then look for the socket. A light that cannot reach the plug ends up on a long wire along the floor, right where the evening chai gets carried through. Decide where the plug end will sit before you hang anything. The Rosary 10M and the rope strips carry IP65 protection, which means they are sealed against dust and protected from water jets. For the other lights, check the rating on the product page, and hang them on the sheltered side.
Which Diwali (Deepavali) balcony setup suits your balcony?
Setup 1: One clean line (small balcony). Run the 5-metre rope strip light, priced at Rs. 378, along the top of the railing, and hang a Toran curtain light, priced at Rs. 133, at the balcony door. The rope gives a solid line that people see from the street, and the Toran frames the way in. Total: Rs. 511.
Setup 2: Dotted railing, glowing wall (small balcony). Wrap the Rosary 10M string light, priced at Rs. 278, along the railing for a softer, dotted glow. Hang the Star curtain light, priced at Rs. 266, on the back wall behind the chairs. The railing glows toward the street and the wall glows toward you. Total: Rs. 544.
Setup 3: Festive corner (small balcony with a seat or a small mandir). Hang the Diya curtain light, priced at Rs. 266, and the Kuber Yantra Ganesh Ji curtain light, priced at Rs. 186, side by side on the corner wall. Wind the Rosary 10M, priced at Rs. 278, around a plant pot or the chair stand. Everything gathers in one corner and the rest of the balcony stays free. Total: Rs. 730.
Setup 4: Ceiling-edge frame (medium balcony with a solid railing). Where the railing cannot carry lights, run the 10-metre rope strip light, priced at Rs. 708, along the ceiling edge or the beam above. The light frames the whole space from above. Fix it at regular points so it keeps a straight line. Total: Rs. 708.
Setup 5: Railing, wall and edge (medium balcony). Rosary 10M along the railing, priced at Rs. 278. The 5-metre rope strip, priced at Rs. 378, along the base of the wall or a ledge. The Mannat Ball curtain light, priced at Rs. 319, across the door or window. Three types, one colour, and no empty corner. Total: Rs. 975.
Setup 6: Two balconies, one look (living room and bedroom). Put one Rosary 10M on each railing, which comes to Rs. 556, and the Star curtain light, priced at Rs. 266, on the living room balcony wall. Use the same colour on both, so the home looks planned when you see it from the road. Total: Rs. 822.
Setup 7: Full effect (large or wrap-around balcony). The 10-metre rope strip along the main railing or ceiling edge, priced at Rs. 708. Two Rosary 10M strings for the side railing and the plants, which come to Rs. 556. The Star curtain light on the back wall and the Mannat Ball curtain light across the door, priced at Rs. 266 and Rs. 319. Total: Rs. 1,849. What should you check before you hang balcony lights?
• Lay each light out and switch it on before you climb up, so a dead strand shows at ground level.
• Do not join sets beyond the limit printed on the product. If you need more sockets, use a proper extension board.
• Keep plugs and joins off the floor and away from the washing line, the watering can and the corner where rain collects.
• Keep wires clear of diyas and crackers.
Diwali balcony lights: FAQs
Q: How do I make a small balcony look bigger with Diwali lights?
A: Light the edges and leave the middle clear. A single line on the railing, as in setup 1, draws the eye outward, while a curtain light on the back wall adds depth. Avoid hanging lights across the middle of the space, because that makes it feel smaller.
Q: Can I hang Diwali lights on a balcony grill or jaali?
A: Yes. Use clips or soft ties, and fix the lights at regular points. Cover any sharp metal edge before the wire goes near it, and do not pull the ties tight, since a tight tie can press into the wire.
Q: How do I light a balcony that has plants?
A: Wind the Rosary string loosely around the pots or the stand, above the soil and out of the way of watering. Keep the plug and the joins dry, and switch the lights off before you water.
Q: How do I decorate a balcony that I use for drying clothes?
A: Keep the lights on the railing and the ceiling edge, and away from the drying rack. Move the washing out of the way in the evenings, and keep the plug end well clear of any water that drips from wet clothes.
Q: Should balcony lights face the street or the house?
A: Face the LEDs outward if you want the show to be seen from the road, and inward if the balcony is mainly for you. A rope strip on the railing can do both, because the line is visible from either side. Keep the plug and the wire on the inside.
Pick the setup closest to your balcony, measure the railing and find the socket, and the rest is an easy evening. The full range is on the balcony lights and the decorative lights. For everyday balcony lighting after the festival, see our balcony and garden lighting guide
